Towers that won’t go by unnoticed

Utrecht’s vertical forest is becoming a “living” city icon, always growing.

As of the end of 2020, Bouwcombinatie Wonderwoods (Boele & van Eesteren | Kondor Wessels Amsterdam), is creating Wonderwoods around Utrecht’s station area, commissioned by G&S Vastgoed & Volker Wessels BVGO .
Wonderwoods has 2 eye-catching towers that are connected through an underground garage and a walkway. The towers, with a total surface area of 70,000 m2, have diverse purposes. They house homes for rent and purchase, offices, and spaces for retail, hospitality services, culture and a semi-public rooftop park. Wonderwoods’ construction is expected to end somewhere in 2024.

Nature in the city

Wonderwoods consists of two green towers of around 105 and 73 meters high. The highest tower, designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti (an architect firm in Milan that’s known globally for its groundbreaking Bosco Verticale) is provided with a vertical forest of greenery clinging to the balconies and façades.
The second tower will be built next to the cinema Kinepolis and is known for its curvy façades – a personal favourite of MVSA Architects. This design also has a lot of greenery on the inside. For instance, the tower will be getting a large atrium and winter gardens along the façades.

An icon for Utrecht, the smart city of the future

Utrecht has an ambitious strategy to boost sustainability, the amount of greenery and health. The Wonderwoods concept was chosen because of the heart-warming, rich mixture of housing, work, relaxation, culture and hospitality services. An innovative city landscape with an acre of trees and bushes within and around two future-proof towers. A splendid, inspiring new living environment where the city’s people can live in harmony with nature.

Working in a construction team

Because of this project’s complexity, Vorsselmans was consulted as early on as the design phase. We collaborated with the developer, contractor and architect. For that exact reason, we worked with our colleague de Groot & Visser from Gorinchem (the Netherlands) to bring MVSA Architects’ idea for the tower to life.
