At the start of 2021, our construction partner BOBgroep started transforming the historical “Galeries Modernes” from 1954 in the inner city of Rotterdam.
The existing building is transformed into a hotel, but will also provide shopping and/or leisure facilities on the ground floor and in the basement.
The former shopping centre was turned into a hip design hotel for the Motel One chain.
The building’s existing concrete structure is kept intact, while an extra level is added on top. The ground floor will include retail services and the storeys above will be the hotel, with 180 guest rooms. The façade design is the same on all sides of the building with a transparent plinth of large glass panes that resembles the rhythm of the original façade. Above the plinth, a glass box and natural stone volumes follow in a horizontal alignment. Few (carefully chosen) materials create a natural yet elegant whole. On the inside of the building, a patio brings in light and nature. Finally, upstairs on the 5th floor, there’s a patio and a pavilion, surrounded by a green roof that provides a gorgeous view of Rotterdam’s city centre.
The property will be completely modernised, so it fits today’s style.
This is a hotel, and that brought our team several challenges to overcome when it comes to acoustics and fire-proofing, on the inside and outside, but also between the rooms. For this project, we collaborated with BOBgroep closely – a great collaboration that went smoothly from start to finish.
