Apollolaan
Apollolaan 171, Amsterdam’s newest state-of-the-art office building has been officially opened.
The office building was commissioned by Kroonenberg Group and designed by OMA / David Gianotten. The result is a transparent building that responds to its surroundings defined by Berlage’s historic architecture from the early twentieth century.
An inviting space as an entrance
The side of the building facing Apollolaan is characterized by interlocking glass pieces, as if they were a jigsaw puzzle. The transparent glass façade gives the building an open and inviting feel and provides natural light inside. The green marble used there to decorate the lobby and central hall stylishly complements the greenery of the numerous trees outside. At the corner is the central entrance. On the side of residential Titian Street, the building is stepped and clad in interwoven custom-made bricks that match the historic homes in the area. The shape of the building has resulted in multiple viewing terraces, including a rooftop terrace for tenant use.
At the corner is the main office entrance. Here the volumes are further reduced with a set-back facade at ground level, creating an inviting public space along Apollolaan at the entrance to the building. The façade on the residential side is clad in custom-designed bricks arranged to create a woven effect.
sustainability
Apollolaan 171 stands on the preserved basement of the old building and reuses the building’s original foundation to minimize waste. Sustainability was given great attention throughout the project. Not only to comply with Amsterdam’s ambitious sustainability program, but also because of its embedding in its green surroundings. For example, sedum roofs with rainwater retention have been installed as well as solar panels that power the charging stations for electric cars. The building is also equipped with triple glazing and a state-of-the-art climate control system.
